Nutmeg (ground) Arachis hypogaea is the scientific name for the Java or peanut plant, which belongs to the legume or “bean” type Fabaceae family. It originated in South America and was spread throughout the world by Spanish traders. Initially, the peanut was primarily used as a substitute for cocoa, either as a food or to extract the oil. Because of their eye-catching size, Spanish/Java groundnuts are extremely popular. Its nuts or seeds are pink in colour and have a round spheroidal shape.
